South Africa has one of the largest and most active diasporas in the world, with significant communities in the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, the United States, and across Europe. If you are South African and living or working abroad — or planning to — the documentation requirements are significant and often frustrating.
This guide covers every major South African document type, what international institutions require, and the practical steps to get your documents recognised.
The South African documentation landscape
South Africa has 11 official languages and a complex governmental structure combining national departments, provincial administrations, and municipalities. This means the same type of document may look slightly different depending on the province and institution that issued it.
For international use, most South African documents are in English — which eliminates the translation requirement in most cases. However, older documents may be in Afrikaans, and community documents, church records, or informal sector documents may be in Zulu, Xhosa, Sotho, or another of the 11 official languages.
Identity documents
The green ID book and smart ID card
South Africa has two current identity document formats: the old green ID book (barcoded book) issued until 2013, and the smart ID card issued from 2013 onwards.
For international use: Both are accepted internationally, though the smart ID card is increasingly preferred as it is more secure and readable by electronic scanners. If you have a green ID book, consider applying for a smart ID card through the Department of Home Affairs before travelling.
If your green ID book is worn, damaged, or very old: Get a replacement smart ID card before any major international application. A worn or damaged document raises unnecessary questions.
Birth certificate (DHA-24)
The South African unabridged birth certificate (DHA-24) shows both parents' details and is required for many international purposes including:
The abridged certificate (an extract) is not accepted for most immigration purposes. Always obtain the unabridged version from the Department of Home Affairs.
Obtaining a birth certificate from abroad: You can apply through the South African High Commission in London (South Africa House, Trafalgar Square). Processing times vary — allow at least 6–8 weeks for normal applications.
Matric results and academic documents
National Senior Certificate (NSC) — matric results
The NSC is administered by the Department of Basic Education and Umalusi. For UK use:
Universities: Most UK universities will accept certified copies of matric results for undergraduate applications. They may contact Umalusi directly for verification for high-stakes applications.
Professional bodies: Some UK professional registration bodies require Umalusi verification of matric results. Umalusi provides an online verification service at umalusi.org.za.
If you need replacement results: Contact the Department of Basic Education through their e-services portal or your provincial education department. Processing takes several weeks.
University degrees and diplomas
South African university degrees are generally well-regarded internationally. The South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) maintains a National Qualifications Framework (NQF) and can issue a SAQA evaluation of your qualification.
UK ENIC (formerly NARIC): For most UK purposes — employment, professional registration, further study — UK ENIC provides a Statement of Comparability for around £48. This tells a UK employer or institution the UK equivalent of your South African qualification.
Professional registration in the UK: The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), General Medical Council (GMC), and other professional bodies have specific requirements for South African healthcare professionals. These typically include SAQA evaluation, IELTS scores, and professional registration history. Check each body's specific requirements.
Police clearance certificate
The South African Police Service (SAPS) clearance certificate is required for many UK visa categories, professional registration, and employment in regulated sectors.
Current application process:
Applications are made through SAPS (saps.gov.za) or through the Criminal Record Centre in Pretoria. The process has been revised several times — check the current SAPS website for the most up-to-date requirements.
From outside South Africa: Applications can be submitted through the South African High Commission or directly to the Criminal Record Centre by post. Processing typically takes 8–12 weeks.
For the UK Home Office: The clearance certificate should be apostilled by the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO).
The apostille process
South Africa is a signatory to the Hague Convention on Apostille. Apostilles for South African documents are issued by DIRCO in Pretoria.
Process:
1. Obtain the original document from the issuing authority
2. Submit to DIRCO in Pretoria (or through their regional offices in Cape Town, Durban, and Johannesburg) with the required fees
3. Receive document back with apostille certificate attached
4. Standard processing: 5–10 working days; expedited: 1–2 working days (at higher cost)
From the UK: Applications can be submitted through a document procurement service in South Africa, or in some cases through the South African High Commission in London. Verify any agent's credentials before using their services.
Documents in South African languages other than English

South Africa has a bilateral agreement with the UK on the mutual recognition of professional qualifications in some sectors, though the specifics depend on the profession. Healthcare, engineering, law, and finance all have their own specific recognition pathways.
For healthcare professionals: the UK has a particular interest in recruiting South African-trained doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals. The NMC has a specific pathway for internationally trained nurses, and the GMC has a similar process for doctors.
Check current registration requirements directly with the relevant UK professional body, as these change more frequently than most immigration requirements.
